*FX has officially given a series order to its untitled “Snowfall” spinoff, with Gail Bean and Isaiah John reprising their roles as Wanda and Leon Simmons. The new series is slated to premiere next year on FX and Hulu, continuing the legacy of the original crime drama.
According to Deadline, the spinoff was first put into development in 2023. It received a pilot order in March and is written and executive-produced by Malcolm Spellman.
The series is set in 1990s Los Angeles, following a recovering addict determined to bring West Coast rap into the mainstream, “while gang wars erupt and record labels move to exploit hip hop culture for their own gain,” per the official synopsis.
Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III join the cast, while Spellman executive produces alongside “Snowfall” veterans Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson.

Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, said, “This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution. We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series ‘Hip Hop Uncovered,’ and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. ‘Snowfall’ was one of the most successful FX dramas ever, and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, and other veterans of the ‘Snowfall’ creative team are on board.”
“Snowfall” premiered on July 5, 2017, and concluded on April 19, 2023, after six seasons and 60 episodes. The series, created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron, followed African American crime families navigating the crack epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles, while exploring CIA involvement in Nicaragua and the intersecting stories of other characters connected to the drug trade.
