Esaw Snipes-Garner Passes Away, Marking End of an Era in Activism
*Esaw Snipes-Garner, the widow of Eric Garner and a quiet but powerful force in the racial justice movement, died on June 17, 2025, at the age of 58. Her death was confirmed by Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network/NAN and reported by multiple news outlets. The cause was linked to longstanding health issues.
“Tragedy can beget tragedy in life, and she weathered more than any single person ever should have to,” Sharpton said in a statement. “Yet Esaw found the resolve to keep going, keep fighting, and protect her family.”
The 2014 Death That Sparked a National Movement
Snipes-Garner became a national figure after her husband, Eric Garner, was killed by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo on July 17, 2014.
Garner was being arrested for allegedly selling loose cigarettes when Pantaleo used a banned chokehold, captured on video, as Garner gasped, “I can’t breathe” 11 times.
The phrase became a rallying cry for protests against police brutality across the country. Despite the medical examiner ruling Garner’s death a homicide, and the chokehold being illegal under NYPD policy, a Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo. He wasn’t fired until 2019, following an NYPD disciplinary trial.

Esaw Snipes-Garner’s Strength Through Loss
Snipes-Garner’s strength was tested again in 2017 when her daughter, Erica Garner, a fierce activist in her own right, died from a heart attack at age 27. The family believed stress from her father’s death contributed to her health issues.
Despite these losses, Esaw continued to advocate for police accountability while staying mostly out of the media spotlight. She worked with Rev. Sharpton and the National Action Network, quietly supporting reforms and demanding justice without fanfare.
Her Unforgettable Response to Pantaleo’s Apology
When Officer Pantaleo later offered condolences, Snipes-Garner made her stance painfully clear. “Hell, no! The time for remorse would have been when my husband was yelling to breathe,” she told reporters. “He’s still working. He’s still getting a paycheck. He’s still feeding his kids, when my husband is six feet under and I’m looking for a way to feed my kids now.”

Tributes Pour In as Activism Community Mourns
Dominique Sharpton, daughter of Rev. Al Sharpton, praised Esaw’s quiet resilience, saying she carried a heavy burden after losing both her husband and daughter in just three years. Social media was filled with condolences and tributes, calling her a mother of the movement and a pillar of perseverance.
No official obituary or medical details have been released yet, but reports confirm her passing followed ongoing health complications. Though she never sought the spotlight, her impact on the national consciousness remains immeasurable.
Legacy and Impact: More Than a Widow
Snipes-Garner’s loss adds another layer to the painful history surrounding Eric Garner’s case. The couple’s fight helped fuel the 2020 passage of the Eric Garner Anti-Chokehold Act in New York, which made chokeholds a felony if they result in injury or death.
Though the DOJ closed its civil rights case in 2019 without filing charges, citing insufficient evidence, the broader legacy of the Garner family’s activism has shaped policing policy and inspired a new generation of justice advocates.
Why Esaw Snipes-Garner’s Voice Still Matters
Esaw Snipes-Garner was more than the widow of a viral tragedy—she was a mother, an advocate, and a truth-teller. Her words captured the emotional weight of injustice, and her silence often spoke louder than headlines.
With her passing, the movement loses another powerful voice, but her legacy continues through every protest chant, policy change, and call for justice sparked by the Garner family’s pain. Rest in power, Esaw.
