*In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Eric Gable carved out a space for himself in the R&B and soul music world with heartfelt vocals and smooth, romantic grooves. Today, he continues to thrive on the music scene as he is preparing his new music venture.
“The music is more inspirational now, very in tune with what’s going on in the world today,” Gable says in an interview with EUR. “It’s positive, energetic—and definitely a different direction from where I started.”
Born on May 18, 1967, Gable became a major figure in the golden era of R&B. His music, defined by love themes and powerful vocals, still resonates with fans of classic soul and R&B.
Gable emerged on the music scene in 1988, signed to Orpheus Records. His breakout came in 1989 with the release of his debut album Caught in the Act. The album made an impressive impact, peaking at No. 25 on the U.S. R&B chart and featuring what would become his signature hit, “Remember (The First Time).” The single went straight to No. 1 on the U.S. R&B charts. With his emotive delivery and relatable lyrics about first love, “Remember (The First Time)” is still a standout R&B classic.
“I remember that first hit — it took us 18 hours to record,” Gable recalls. “It was the last thing we put on the CD, and the first song to be released.”

In addition to his chart-topping debut single, Caught in the Act featured other hits like “Hard Up,” which reached No. 33, and “Love Has Got to Wait,” which peaked at No. 13 on the R&B charts. Gable also showcased his versatility on the duet “Your Precious Love” with gospel singer Tamika Patton in 1990, which climbed to No. 20 on the R&B chart.
Following his successful debut, Gable released his sophomore effort, Can’t Wait to Get You Home, in 1991. The album peaked at No. 44 on the U.S. R&B charts. The title track became a fan favorite and climbed to No. 12 on the R&B singles chart.
Gable’s next studio album, Process of Elimination, dropped in 1994, peaking at No. 55 on the R&B albums chart. It featured the single “Process of Elimination,” which reached No. 23 on the R&B chart and also crossed over to the Adult R&B chart at No. 24. It was his only song to chart in the U.K., where it reached No. 63 in March 1994.
Gable is now crafting his next album.
“The music I’m working on now is uplifting—it’s message music,” Gable says. “It’s about love, faith, encouragement… something people can feel and hold on to. It’s not just for churchgoers—it’s for everyone who needs light in a dark time.”

He describes his current sound as spiritually uplifting and aligned with artists like BeBe and CeCe Winans: “That type of message music that’s more universal.”
Today, Gable wears many hats. Based in New Orleans, he now pastors a church and is working on a new album. “Sometimes I have to ask myself if I’m doing too much,” he says. “But I’ve learned to pace myself and focus on what’s important.”
On May 3, Gable experienced a personal loss with the passing of his father, Lanier “Dixon” Dixon, who was born on July 18, 1936. Dixon was laid to rest in New Orleans (05-16-25). Gable reflects on the preparation his father gave him, saying, “My father prepared me for everything—he got everything in order for us.”
He’s also acutely aware of how much the music scene in New Orleans has changed. “Live music is bigger than ever. It’s way different than when I first started out,” Gable observes. “There are so many venues and young artists now. New Orleans is thriving — even if there’s a hurricane coming, people throw a party!”
As the R&B genre continues to evolve, Gable’s contributions remain a reminder of an era when soulful expression and romantic storytelling were at the forefront of Black music.
“I’m not done,” he says. “Once this album is finished and the music takes hold, I want to do something great — something life-changing.”
