*The first official trailer has arrived for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s upcoming HBO documentary, “Earth, Wind & Fire.” The two-minute preview offers a vibrant first look at the film, which traces the legendary band’s rise from Chicago to global superstardom. The documentary is set to premiere on June 7, 2026, on both HBO and Max, following its world debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 3, 2026.
A Spiritual and Musical Journey
The trailer opens with archival performance footage before cutting to modern interviews. Band members, including Philip Bailey and Verdine White, describe the unique alchemy of Earth, Wind & Fire. “Once you strike that first note, there’s something that happens,” one voice explains. “I feel my heart open up. Feet get to moving.” The footage highlights the band’s iconic horn section, intricate choreography, and the unmistakable falsetto of Bailey.
Questlove, who won an Oscar for his directorial debut “Summer of Soul,” frames the band as more than just hitmakers. “They tricked their audience into positivity,” Questlove says in the trailer. “Everything is an affirmation. This is what that band is about.” The preview weaves together concert performances, behind-the-scenes clips, and commentary from admirers across generations.
Star-Studded Interviews
The documentary features an impressive roster of interview subjects. Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama both appear, discussing the band’s cultural reach. Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea also provide insight. Their reflections underscore how Earth, Wind & Fire blended jazz, funk, soul, and African influences into a wholly original sound.
“You’re thinking they’re coming from Africa or from outer space,” one interview subject notes. Another adds, “It wasn’t even a show. It was theater.”
Questlove’s Growing Documentary Legacy
This marks Questlove’s fourth major music documentary. His debut, “Summer of Soul,” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2022. That film resurrected the forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and earned widespread acclaim. He followed with “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” in 2025, a complex look at Sly Stone. Most recently, he co-directed “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music.”
With “Earth, Wind & Fire,” Questlove returns to a band he has long cited as a major influence. The Roots, his legendary hip-hop group, will perform live with Earth, Wind & Fire at the Tribeca world premiere. That performance takes place on June 3, 2026, ahead of the film’s HBO debut four days later.

A Legacy of Positivity
The trailer makes clear that Questlove’s documentary is not a standard rise-fall-redemption arc. Instead, it focuses on the band’s spiritual philosophy and their insistence on uplifting messages during difficult times. “I’m saying to myself, if they can do that, what can I do?” one interviewee recalls thinking after seeing them perform.
“Earth, Wind & Fire” premieres June 7, 2026, on HBO and will stream simultaneously on Max.
