Trump Warns Homeless to Leave Nation’s Capital
*Donald Trump signaled Sunday (08-10-25) that he is preparing a swift crackdown on crime and homelessness in Washington, D.C. Posting on Truth Social, he wrote, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital.”
His comments follow a recent attempted carjacking of a former Department of Government Efficiency member, Edward Coristine, which he cited as part of the problem.
Trump promised fast results, comparing his planned actions to his claimed success at the southern border. “It’s all going to happen very fast, just like the Border. We went from millions pouring in, to ZERO in the last few months. This will be easier — Be prepared!”
In his post, Trump emphasized there would be no leniency, declaring, “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK.” His rhetoric suggests an aggressive strategy to relocate homeless residents away from the heart of the city.

Executive Order Sparks Debate
Last month, Trump signed an executive order making it easier for cities to remove homeless individuals from public spaces. The move drew criticism from homeless advocacy groups, who argue it criminalizes poverty rather than addressing its root causes. His latest comments indicate he plans to use this authority in the nation’s capital.
Trump also announced plans to hold a press event at the White House on Monday to outline his proposals for tackling D.C. crime. This comes amid a White House-led seven-day crime initiative, which includes deploying more federal law enforcement in the city.
Despite Trump’s claims, Justice Department data shows that violent crime in Washington, D.C. hit a 30-year low in 2024. Homicides, robberies, and armed carjackings all saw declines compared to the previous year.
D.C. Leaders Push Back on Trump’s Rhetoric
The District’s leadership has frequently clashed with Trump over his portrayal of the city. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser dismissed his comments as exaggerated, saying, “Any comparison to a war-torn country is hyperbolic and false.” She acknowledged the need for continued improvement but emphasized the federal government’s unique ability to assist the city.
Bowser added, “I also just really want to say we always want to get better, and there are ways more than any other city in America that the federal government can help the District of Columbia.” Her remarks reflect a belief that collaboration, rather than inflammatory language, is the best way forward.
As Trump intensifies his focus on crime in the nation’s capital, the clash between political rhetoric and crime statistics is likely to remain a hot-button issue. With his forceful statements and upcoming press briefing, the debate over how to address D.C.’s challenges shows no signs of cooling.
