*Cracker Barrel’s recent decision to revamp its image has stirred strong emotions among its devoted customers, with many expressing disappointment over the loss of its signature charm.
As Men’s Journal reports, last summer, CEO Julie Felss Masino announced plans to update all 660 Cracker Barrel locations, citing the need to stay “relevant” in today’s dining landscape. “Some of our recipes and processes haven’t evolved in decades,” Masino added.
Now, according to The Wall Street Journal, 40 restaurants have undergone changes, trading their warm, brown, clutter-filled walls for a white, minimalist design reminiscent of a modern farmhouse.
The transformation has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, according to Men’s Journal. One longtime patron shared a video online, calling the new look “gross” and captioning it, “They’ve white washed the old country store ???@Cracker Barrel you guys had a aesthetic. it was fine wtf is this I feel uncomfortable.”
Another customer, speaking to The Wall Street Journal, described the brighter, open atmosphere as “something colder.”

Not everyone dislikes the update. Some have embraced the refreshed style, with one reporter tweeting, “Cracker Barrel’s getting a glow up. Diners are already nostalgic for its dusty, musty Americana.”
Still, for many, the shift feels like a betrayal of the chain’s roots, erasing the rustic charm that made Cracker Barrel a beloved destination. As the remodel rolls out further, the debate over tradition versus modernity continues to divide its loyal fanbase.
