*A surprising culprit might be behind your persistent breakouts, and it’s not your diet; it’s your cooking habits.
According to dermatologist Dr. Helena Watson, exposure to airborne grease and cooking oils can clog pores, leading to stubborn acne, particularly along the jawline and forehead.
“Most people don’t connect their kitchen routine to their skin,” Watson told UK retailer Plumbworld. “But exposure to cooking oils and airborne grease can clog pores and lead to stubborn breakouts.”
A Plumbworld survey revealed that 63% of people don’t wash their face or hair after cooking, and 40% skip using the kitchen extractor fan, allowing grease particles to settle on their skin.
“This is a recipe for breakouts,” Watson said. “Even if your skincare routine is solid, not removing this layer of grime can undo all your efforts.”

Failing to cleanse properly before bed exacerbates the issue, as grease presses deeper into pores overnight.
“If you go to bed without cleansing properly, you’re pressing those particles deeper into your pores overnight,” she added.
To protect your skin, Watson suggests three steps: always use the extractor fan to reduce airborne grease, cleanse your face and hairline after cooking, and change pillowcases once or twice weekly if you cook often.
“Skin health isn’t just about what you apply—it’s about your environment,” a Plumbworld spokesperson noted.
Small changes in your kitchen routine could lead to clearer skin.
