*We spoke to Christina Milian and Reno Wilson about their exciting roles in the new crime drama series “Dexter: Original Sin,” which premiered Friday, December 13, on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. The 10-episode prequel offers a gripping look at Dexter Morgan’s early years as he evolves from a troubled student to the serial killer audiences first met in the original “Dexter” series.
The new show takes place 15 years before viewers first met Dexter in the hit SHOWTIME series. Here’s the synopsis:
Set in 1991 Miami, DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
“DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN” stars Christian Slater, Patrick Gibson, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, special guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey. Michael C. Hall returns to voice the inner monologue in Dexter Morgan’s head.

Milian steps into the role of Detective Maria LaGuerta, while Wilson portrays the enigmatic Detective Bobby Watt, both bringing a fresh dynamic to the “Dexter” universe. In our discussion with the pair, they shared insights into their characters, the show’s thrilling premise, and what fans can expect from this dark and compelling origin story.
For newbies to the franchise, Maria was central to the original series. So how does “Original Sin” depict her early days as a detective? Will fans discover new layers to her personality and motivations? Here’s what Milian told us: “Well, absolutely… She’s already got an established career. But her coming into the Miami Metro Department, she’s the first female, let alone Afro-Latina detective walking in. She really pinpoints…caring about the community and solving crimes that nobody’s got their eye on,” the actress/singer explained.

“I think that’s one of the things you see, that she’s got a sense of compassion and everything about her in the original,” Milian added. “But one thing, there’s still like a through point. She’s always really intuitive. She’s open-minded to trying to figure out these cases. But she’s always got her eye on the prize. She was born with that.”
Wilson noted that Maria is “showing a lot of vulnerability at this early stage of her career.”
Luna Lauren Vélez portrayed Maria in the original “Dexter” series, and Milian said she aimed to “continue her legacy.”
“I watched the whole entire season again when I got the role,” Milian added.

Wilson joins the world of “Dexter” as Detective Bobby Watt, another “fresh face” to the franchise.
“He’s a fresh face to the Dexter universe, but an old face actually in Miami Metro,” Wilson said. Detective Bobby Watt is Dexter and Deb’s godfather, which is kind of cool. And he’s Harry Morgan’s best friend and his partner. “Dexter Original Sin” takes place in 1991 and 1973. So in 1973, you get to see a younger Dexter, younger Bobby Watt, and Harry Morgan when they worked in the narcotics division. We get to see Bobby is kind of a part of their family. He’s a loving person in their lives.”
Wilson also teased that there are “a lot of gaps that are filled in our show.”
“It still has that same Dexter DNA, but there are a lot of gaps that are being filled in Original Sin for the OG watches,” he added. “I think you could still start watching Dexter Original Sin in and of itself.”
