Cast of ‘Riches’ on Being Nigerian Actors Leading a New Drama Series| EUR Exclusive

*Amazon Prime’s new series “Riches” is the family drama you didn’t know you needed!

The show features a prominent Nigerian family based in the UK who own a beauty company that faces many challenges. After they experience a significant loss all hell breaks loose. Two estranged siblings return home and now everyone must decide if they will unite to overcome the issues or will their animosity ruin the family business.

“Riches” stars Deborah Ayorinde (Them) and Emmanuel Imani who portray Nina and Simon Richards, the estranged siblings. I spoke with Ayorinde and Imani about their roles, and Emmanuel shared his reaction when he first read the script.

“I’m British and based in England and unfortunately I don’t come across scripts like this very often. Where the lead characters driving this plot at the center are of immigrant backgrounds and they built up this empire. And are so wealthy and successful. I don’t get to see scripts like that very often,” said Imani.

Imani also noted that he was grateful he wasn’t playing a drug dealer. Shows about drug dealers have gained popularity, not to knock anyone else’s art or story but it is good to watch Black families being successful outside of that narrative.

The other thing to point out here is it’s good to see other Black cultures being presented in a positive. With Black American TV, there are shows like “Power” or “Snowfall” but we also have had shows like “Scandal,” portraying a successful black lawyer, or light-hearted fun shows like “Insecure.” Unfortunately, Black actors in the UK have yet to have as many of those same opportunities.

Deborah Ayorinde speaks to that as well as being proud that different Black cultures are being shown on TV.

“I’ve been blessed to see the Black experience from many different angles and experience the Black experience from different angles. Two things I’ve discovered is we are different in a lot of ways and I think it’s important to respect our differences,” she said.

Ayorinde also noted that different cultures are also the same in many ways. It may just be a tv show but “Riches” will highlight the differences and similarities in Black cultures when it comes to Family. Because family drama is family drama!

Check out “Riches” when it begins streaming December 2 on Prime Video.
