
*Broadcasting legend Bryant Gumbel was reportedly rushed to a New York hospital on Monday night after suffering what sources described as a “medical emergency” at his Manhattan apartment, according to the New York Post.
While details surrounding his condition have not been disclosed, a family member told TMZ that Gumbel is “okay,” and remained under hospital care as of Tuesday. The longtime journalist retired from television in 2023 following a decades-long career in morning and sports broadcasting.
Gumbel has faced serious health challenges in the past. In 2009, he revealed that he had undergone surgery to remove part of his lung after being diagnosed with lung cancer. At the time, he attributed his illness to years of heavy smoking, saying he once smoked three packs a day during his youth.

The Emmy-winning broadcaster first joined NBC’s “Today” show in 1982 and cohosted the program for 15 years before departing in 1997. He later became the host of HBO’s acclaimed investigative sports series “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” which concluded its run in 2023 after more than two decades on air.
At the time, In 2023, Gumbel said he was “ready to turn the page,” adding, “Since day one at Real Sports we’ve consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard, and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports.”
Gumbel noted that telling stories about “race, gender, class, opportunity and so much more” had been deeply rewarding, concluding, “Although goodbyes are never easy, I’ve decided that now’s the time to move on.” The acclaimed program, which premiered in 1995, earned 37 Sports Emmys and three Peabody Awards during its nearly three-decade run.
