*In a weekend of mindless releases, moviegoers’ best bet is “Brave the Dark.” Directed by Damian Harris, the Angel Studios’ film is based on a true story. “Brave the Dark” chronicles a troubled teen’s journey to beat the odds in his nature versus nurture predicament. So relevant in a time where the government and companies are dismantling DEI programs, the movie states,
“Some kids are born behind the 8 ball. Don’t those kids deserve the same chance as the others?”
When a teacher, Mr. Deen (Jared Harris), discovers one of his students, Nate (Nicholas Hamilton) has been living out of his car and thrown in jail, he decides to bail him out. Deen does this despite school officials suggesting the system take care of the student. Determined to curb Nate’s self-destructive behavior, Mr. Deen quickly discovers a host of dark secrets that are slowly tearing Nate apart. What started as a good deed became a desperate fight to save Nate from his own demons. As Nate spirals deeper into despair, Mr. Deen must decide how far he’s willing to go to save a kid on the brink of losing everything. Sasha Bhasin, Jamie Harris, Rodney Jones, Gina Jun, Will Price, Banks Quinney, Martin Jarvis, Kimberlyn Fairbanks, and Jonathan Davis also star.
‘Companion’
“Clone Cops” sums up cinema’s current crop of movies as “Blood is what they want.” And “Companion” fits the bill for a copious flow of blood. The f**k bots in “Companion” can be programmed for more than sex, much to the dismay of its victims. Directed by Drew Hancock, “Companion” delves into what happens at a weekend getaway for leisure but turns bloody and violent when a subservient android (Sophie Thatcher) goes haywire. Jack Quaid, Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, and Harvey Guillén are among the cast.

‘Dog Man’
“Dog Man,” directed by Peter Hastings, is exactly that. When a police officer and his police dog are injured, a life-saving surgery fuses the two of them. Dog Man then goes after Petey the Cat to keep it from cloning himself and going on a crime spree. The decapitated freak Dog Man reminds one of the monkey-headed Robbie Williams in “Better Man.” Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, Isla Fisher, Billy Boyd, Ricky Gervais, and Stephen Root are voiced in “Dog Man.”

‘Clone Cops’
The mindless and bloody “Clone Cops,” directed by Daniel Dones, tells the story of an alternate future where a gang of outlaws must defend their lives against an assault from a disposable police force cloned in a lab and programmed for violence. The gang battles waves of replicating security forces until they discover a secret about who they are and what they’re up against. Phillip Cordell, Ravi Patel, Quinnlan Ashe, Steve Byrne, Ted Welch, Allison Shrum, and Laura Holloway are among the featured cast.
