*Last month, Los Angeles became the epicenter of Black creativity and empowerment as Art Melanated and Nice Crowd (formerly ABFF Ventures) presented the inaugural Black Art Empowerment Summit at the London Hotel in West Hollywood.
This sold-out event celebrated Black artistry and ignited meaningful conversations about art, culture, and community while offering actionable steps to empower Black artists, collectors, and advocates. The event was curated by Art Melanated founders Sol and Jennia Aponte in collaboration with Jeff and Nicole Friday, the visionary duo behind Nice Crowd. Together, they created a space where attendees could explore art collection, investment strategies, and the role of Black art in shaping cultural narratives.
The summit attracted an impressive mix of creatives, industry leaders, and cultural enthusiasts, including notable figures such as Nika King (Euphoria), Vanessa Williams (Soul Food), Melinda Williams (Daddy’s Little Girls), and CCH Pounder (NCIS). These luminaries joined forces with artists, collectors, and advocates for a transformative day of networking and inspiration.
Dynamic panel discussions were the heart of the summit, featuring moderators and panelists like KBLA’s Tavis Smiley, world-renowned artists Ferrari Sheppard, Kevin Williams, and Harmonia Rosales, Grammy-winning producer Rikki Hughes, and wealth advisor Ayesha Selden. These thought leaders tackled topics such as:
- The Business of Art: Understanding how to turn artistic talent into sustainable success.
- The Power of Art Collecting: Exploring the cultural and financial value of investing in Black art.
- Art Accessibility: Innovative payment models and appraisals that make art ownership attainable for all.
A Vision for the Future

The Black Art Empowerment Summit was more than just a one-day event—it was a rallying cry for a movement. Sol and Jennia Aponte expressed their excitement about the impact of the summit.
“We wanted to create an event that not only celebrates Black art but empowers those involved to push boundaries and seize new opportunities,” said Jennia.
Their unique vision demonstrated through their nomadic gallery, Art Melanated, continues to challenge traditional notions of what art can achieve. This summit builds on its mission to amplify the voices of artists of color, fostering meaningful connections between creators and their communities.
Jeff and Nicole Friday, pioneers in showcasing culture through events like the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), emphasized the importance of expanding their focus to include the fine arts. Their rebranded company, Nice Crowd, is committed to creating experiences that elevate comedy, food, and fine art while celebrating Black achievement.
The summit offered both inspiration and tangible tools for attendees. From seasoned collectors enhancing their portfolios to emerging artists seeking career guidance, the event provided practical insights and valuable networking opportunities.
Grammy-winning producer Rikki Hughes highlighted the significance of initiatives like this.
“Art is more than a medium of expression—it’s a powerful way to preserve our stories and build wealth in our communities.”
The summit concluded with a resounding promise: this is only the beginning. Art Melanated and Nice Crowd plan to expand their collaboration, hosting future events that advocate for Black artists, promote investment in Black art, and foster greater inclusion within the art world.
