Bill Maher’s “Real Time” Rant Triggers Major Backlash
*On the May 30 episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the comedian took aim at women who stay in abusive relationships — and social media lit up with fury. Centering his monologue around Cassie Ventura and FKA Twigs, Maher questioned why victims remain with their abusers, even in the face of violence and public documentation.
“If you’re being abused, you’ve got to leave right away.” Maher said. “It’s not victim-shaming to expect women to have the agency to leave toxic relationships.” But those comments, delivered in Maher’s typical snarky tone, didn’t land well. Many accused him of blaming victims and downplaying the complexities of trauma, power, and manipulation.
“Enthusiastic Consent” and Cassie’s Texts
Maher also pointed to text messages exchanged between Cassie and Sean “Diddy” Combs — currently facing sex trafficking and racketeering charges — to argue that their sex life appeared consensual. “If Diddy walks free, it will be because of an endless stream of texts from Cassie expressing ‘enthusiastic consent.’” he said, referencing Combs’ infamous “freak-offs.”
But experts and survivors quickly pushed back, noting that coerced consent is not true consent. Many pointed out that in abusive relationships, victims often send friendly or intimate messages to avoid further harm — not because they’re genuinely comfortable or willing.

Dragging Tina Turner Into It Made Things Worse
Maher then compared Cassie and FKA Twigs to Tina Turner, saying, “Tina somehow got away. Why couldn’t they?” That line sent the internet into overdrive. Critics were quick to remind Maher that Turner’s decision to leave Ike came after decades of extreme abuse, financial isolation, and zero support systems — especially during the 1970s.
“That comparison is not just outdated — it’s offensive,” wrote one user on X. “This man is ignorant about abuse, history, and facts.”
Calls for Accountability or… a Mic Drop?
Maher’s solution? “Report it immediately. Don’t journal about it. Don’t turn it into a one-woman show. And most importantly, don’t keep f***ing him.” His attempt to sound tough came off as tone-deaf and cruel to many watching.
One critic posted, “This is why women don’t come forward. You’re mocked for staying, and you’re doubted when you leave.” Others called Maher’s stance “MeToo fatigue disguised as logic.”
Supporters Say Maher Was Just Being “Real”
While backlash was strong, Maher had his defenders. A few commenters said he was right to suggest that victims have agency and that public figures shouldn’t be above critique. One post read, “If you stay for a decade with the same person doing the same thing, it’s fair to ask why.” Still, these takes were far outnumbered by those calling Maher’s monologue ignorant, outdated, and dangerous.

A Pattern of Provocation: Maher’s Controversial History
This isn’t Maher’s first time wading into murky waters. In 1998, he controversially defended teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, saying, “How can a woman rape a man?” In 2021, he defended actor Armie Hammer amid cannibalism and abuse allegations, saying women “knew what they were getting into.”
He was also sued in 2004 by an ex who alleged abuse and racist remarks. Though the case was settled out of court, critics point to a pattern of minimizing or mocking abuse victims.
The Real Issue: Abuse Is Never That Simple
Domestic violence experts say Maher’s take erases the real risks victims face when trying to leave. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, it can take seven or more attempts to permanently escape. Fear, financial control, threats, and emotional manipulation all play a role.
In Cassie’s case, a 2016 hotel surveillance video showed her trying to flee. FKA Twigs described losing her sense of self under Shia LaBeouf’s control. Maher’s oversimplified narrative fails to account for these deeply traumatic realities.
“Victim-blaming in a blazer is still victim-blaming,” one user summed up.
