*Former MTV VJ Bill Bellamy is speaking candidly about why he never pursued a romantic relationship with pop music icon Janet Jackson.
In a recent conversation with The Art of Dialogue, Bellamy acknowledged that the decision came down to protecting something he valued more than a romantic opportunity. “I think I fumbled the Janet Jackson situation because of the friendship,” he said, per Complex. “I never wanted to cross the line… because I felt like she was actually really a good friend of mine.”
The two crossed paths during one of Jackson’s most iconic periods. Bellamy described being on set with her during the “janet.” era, a time he recalls as a masterclass in natural, unforced star power. “That was peak Janet,” Bellamy said. “Effortless beauty… low-cut jeans, abs, just natural. I was like, ‘Yo, this is crazy.’ ”

Beyond the personal dynamic, Bellamy recalled being genuinely overwhelmed by the scale of what surrounded Jackson during her massive tours. The production that traveled with her was unlike anything he had witnessed, and he said the experience permanently shaped his understanding of what it truly meant to operate at the highest level of the entertainment industry. “I was like, ‘When I make it big, this is how it’s supposed to look,’ ” he said.
What made the situation more layered, Bellamy has said over the years, was that the feelings were not one-sided. During a 2021 interview with PEOPLE, he was direct about it. “There was an attraction, I’ll be honest with you… there was something going on,” he said, adding that while Jackson kept things subtle, her interest was unmistakable. “She was shy about it but showed in her flirty ways that she dug me more than just a little.”
For Bellamy, the friendship ultimately won out — leaving one of the more intriguing almost-romances of the 1990s firmly in the realm of what could have been.
