*On his final full day in office, President Joe Biden made a significant move in criminal justice reform by granting five pardons, including one for activist Kemba Smith Pradia.
We reported earlier that the Richmond native was convicted of a drug offense in 1994 and sentenced to 24 years. In 2000, her sentence was commuted by President Bill Clinton, and since then, she has become a powerful advocate for criminal justice reform, sharing her experiences to influence policy changes that promote rehabilitation over punitive measures.
In the years following her prison release, Smith has been advocating for domestic violence awareness, women’s empowerment, and racial equity via her nonprofit Kemba Smith Foundation. Her story has also been turned into a film titled “KEMBA,” which is streaming on BET+.
Check out what she had to say about the movie in the clip above.

On Instagram, Smith thanked Biden for giving her a second chance.
“Today, I dropped to my knees, thanking God for this moment. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and humbled by the news that I have been granted a full pardon by President Joe Biden,” she wrote in part. “This incredible act of grace not only expunges my criminal record and restores my rights but also reaffirms the belief that our past does not define our future.”
Biden’s pardons were part of his commitment to restorative justice and exemplify his administration’s broader efforts to recognize historical injustices while endorsing rehabilitation and second chances.
A message on Pradia’s Instagram page expressed gratitude to Biden for also pardoning Michelle West, who was sentenced in 1994 to two life terms plus 50 years for her involvement in drug-related crimes (including murder) in southeast Michigan.
“Today, we celebrate the powerful acts of justice, mercy, and second chances! Kemba Smith Pradia has received a pardon, and Michelle West has been granted clemency,” the message read. “It’s been a long challenging, but blessed road that you’ve been on @kemba_smith and we’re so honored to have been able to support you in the work that you do and have done for so many, especially Michelle West @freemichellewest and her daughter @miquellewest 💕🥹. Their stories are a testament to resilience, hope, and the tireless efforts of advocates who believe in fairness and redemption.”
The post added, “Thank you to all who have been touched and inspired by Kemba and Michelle’s journey depicted in KEMBA. Your compassion and advocacy have played a vital role in bringing awareness to their stories.”
