*The National Action Network has thrown its support behind Elvira McBride, the mother of A’Shari Hobbs, a 17-year-old senior at St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, California. The community organization is questioning disciplinary actions taken against the student that have reportedly barred her from prom, graduation activities, and championship track events.
According to reports and school records reviewed by media outlets, school administrators acknowledged that the punishment imposed against A’Shari was “not a result of A’Shari’s conduct.” Instead, the disciplinary action allegedly stemmed from threats made by her mother following an altercation involving students on campus.
A Press Conference Demanding Answers
The National Action Network, along with Project Islamic Hope and St. Mary’s Academy alumni, is sponsoring a press conference today, Friday, May 15 (2026), at 1:00 pm. The event will take place at St. Mary’s Academy, located at 701 Grace Avenue in Inglewood, CA.
Elvira McBride, A’Shari’s mother, will be present alongside community leaders to address the situation and call for fairness.

Senior Milestones at Risk
Supporters argue that A’Shari’s senior year milestones are not expendable. Prom, graduation, and championship competition are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that she earned through years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance.
The National Action Network is calling on Dr. Brandi Odom-Lucas and the leadership of St. Mary’s Academy to show empathy, compassion, and grace by immediately allowing A’Shari, a star track and field athlete, to participate in her senior activities, including prom and graduation ceremonies.
Concerns About Fairness and Accountability
This situation raises serious concerns about fairness, accountability and whether a child should suffer life-changing consequences for the actions of a parent. The organization’s statement reads: “You cannot negotiate with cruelty.”
A’Shari did nothing to deserve this punishment, according to the National Action Network. At the very least, the group argues, the school should refund all money already paid by her mother toward senior events if they continue to deny her participation.
Najee Ali, senior organizer for the Los Angeles National Action Network, emphasized that discipline should be fair, measured and directed toward the individuals responsible for misconduct. Punishment should not be imposed upon a student whose own conduct the school itself admits was not the cause of these disciplinary actions.
The organization urges the administration to reconsider this decision and ensure that justice, fairness and humanity prevail. The press conference on May 15 is expected to draw community members and advocates calling for an immediate resolution.
