*Las Vegas resident Taniesha Travis called an Uber to give her a ride home from the grocery store — but says she experienced a vulgar display of racism from the driver and it cost him his job.
As 8 News Now reports, Travis doesn’t have a car so she uses Uber every day but when she used the ride-sharing app on Saturday, she was slapped with the type of racial discrimination that would make headlines.
“I was grocery shopping at Smiths,” she said. “I requested an Uber XL. It was only me and my daughter.”

Travis says she was paired with an Uber driver named Michael, who sent her this message in the app calling her a racial slur: “Great. another. N*igga from Smith’s buying groceries for 6 kids. F*uck off N*gga.”
She reported the incident to Uber and by Sunday evening, the company confirmed the ride, and issued this statement to 8 News Now: “This is beyond offensive and has no place in society. The driver has been removed from the app,” said Andrew Hasbun, a senior communications associate at Uber.
Travis hopes that what happened to her will empower others to not stay silent.
“Unfortunately some people are naive that stuff like this does happen. Speak up if anything like this happens to anybody else.”
