*A four-year-old video of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones making what many are calling a racial remark recently surfaced and now the NAACP is weighing in on the controversy.

The NAACP considers the video of Jones referencing some random black woman “racist” and “concerning” and, overall, believe his position on players’ right to protest “seems to be consistent with the ‘overseer mentality.’”

This week, The Blast published a 2013 video of Jones that was shot at the Warwick Melrose Hotel in Dallas, Texas. He is walking near the bar when a fan asks him to deliver a special message for the recent engagement or wedding of a couple who are Cowboys fans.

Jones looks directly into the camera and says, “Jennifer, congratulations on the wedding. Now, you know he’s with a black girl tonight, don’t you?”

The fan in question is white reportedly white.

Many online users are wondering what’s so racist about what he said?

Aubrey Hooper, President of the Dallas NAACP, says, “I think Mr. Jones’ actions are concerning. In addition, his commentary around this issue of players’ right to protest are inconsistent with the philosophy that all Americans are entitled to free speech. In fact, it seems to be consistent with the ‘overseer mentality,’ which seeks to limit freedoms.”

Last month, Jones took a controversial position on NFL players protesting, promising to bench any Cowboys player who “disrespects the flag.”

The NAACP responded by issuing a statement calling Jones’ comments “more than tone-deaf, more than misinformed and misguided – they are a public commitment by an NFL owner to violate his players’ Constitutional right to free speech.”

The NAACP Dallas chapter, along with the Coalition For Justice, is holding an event Sunday during the Eagles vs. Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium where participants will be kneeling in solidarity with players.

While Jones issued an apology, the NFL has yet to comment.
