*Serena Williams dropped the first set, but fought like a pit bull to take the next two in her quarterfinals win at the French Open on Thursday.
Inching closer to a record-equaling 22nd Grand Slam title, the tennis star beat Yulia Putintseva 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in a tough match riddled with all kinds of unforced errors.
”I kept missing. Just misfiring. Honestly, at one point I didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said the defending champion. ”I guess I was not the most positive mentally, but obviously I didn’t want to stop.”
In the second set, on a cold and rain-soaked Court Philippe Chatrier, Serena came within 5 points of losing the match to 60th ranked Putintseva.
”I honestly didn’t think I was going to win that in the second set,” said Williams, who will face another unseeded opponent, 58th-ranked Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, in the semifinals. ”Somehow I did.”
