*Michael B. Jordan’s “Sinners” has arrived on Max, with an added way for filmgoers to see it at home.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the critically-acclaimed feature, which the streamer premiered on July 4, can be watched via streaming of the exact theatrical version or by selecting the version of it in Black American Sign Language (BASL). The latter option puts a history-making spin on the “Sinners” experience, as Warner Bros. acknowledged it being the first time a streaming service has interpreted a film into BASL. An press release breaking the news defined Black American Sign Language as “a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions and cultural nuances.”
For Max, the release of Sinners in BASL marks “a major step forward in accessibility, representation, and visibility in streaming.”
“For the first time, the Black Deaf community will have streaming access to a more immersive experience in their language,” stated the press release, which also encouraged Max subscribers who sign in ASL but are unfamiliar with BASL to “follow along with this interpretation.”

The BASL version of “Sinners” is interpreted Nakia Smith, “an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline,” Max described.
Smith’s performance of the BASL is directed by Rosa Lee Timm. Timm’s past work includes directing ASL versions of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “A Minecraft Movie.”
“Sinners” is the latest ASL-versioned film to come to Mas, joining “Barbie” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” as well as the hit HBO series “The Last of Us.”
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, “Sinners” features Jordan in a dual role as the Smokestack Twins, Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore.
The horror thriller centers around the brothers, who return to their Mississippi-based hometown to start over, but encounter something more sinister than they could imagine.
In addition to Jordan, “Sinners” stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. During its theatricals run, the movie brought in a worldwide gross of $364 million to emerge as the ninth highest-grossing film of 2025.
Weighing in on the benefit of “Sinners’” use of BASL, Naomi Waibel, senior vp Global Product Management at Warner Bros. Discovery, attributed the pairing to an effort to go beyond “a one-size-fits-all approach” regarding accessibility to the Proximity Media–produced box-office hit.
“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve,” Waibel said in a statement.
Waibel added: “Sinners with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.”
