*Serena Williams revealed that her Crip Walk during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime performance was at his request.
The tennis legend, who appeared during Lamar’s “Not Like Us” track, said she joined the show because the rapper—who, like her, is from Compton—personally invited her to take part.
“When @kendricklamar and team called and was like ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal,'” Williams wrote Tuesday on Instagram.
“I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a superbowl? (Never) let’s do it!” she said. “I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story.”
After her halftime performance, Serena shared a clip on X showing her backstage and joking: “Man, I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon! Ooh, I would’ve been fined!”

Serena’s husband — Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian — celebrated her performance in an X post on Monday.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows. …,” Ohanian wrote, the Los Angeles Times reports. “This is bigger than the music.”
Fans find it surprising that Williams performed the Crip Walk, a dance associated with gang culture, despite the tragic loss of her sister Yetunde Price, who was an innocent victim of gang violence. Crips gang member Robert Maxfield was sentenced to 15 years for voluntary manslaughter.
