*”The Smurfs” are back, and they’re bringing superstar power with them.
Paramount Animation has just dropped the official trailer for its upcoming animated feature “Smurfs,” and it arrives with a major musical surprise: a brand-new original song by Rihanna, titled “Friend of Mine.”
The song, lifted from the film’s upcoming soundtrack, will be released this Friday, giving fans a taste of the pop icon’s latest work before the movie hits theaters on July 18.
Rihanna, who leads the voice cast as the iconic Smurfette, also steps behind the scenes as a producer on the project, alongside Jay Brown and Ty Ty Smith. Paramount chief Brian Robbins called her “the most legendary Smurfette ever,” a sentiment sure to be echoed by fans of the Grammy-winning singer and Fenty mogul.

In the trailer, Rihanna’s voice brings Smurfette to life in bold, blue fashion, while her song adds emotional depth and energy to the vibrant visuals. The movie, directed by “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” alum Chris Miller, promises a magical and heartfelt journey packed with humor, adventure, and star power.
Joining Rihanna in the voice cast are John Goodman as Papa Smurf, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Nick Kroll, Xolo Maridueña, Hannah Waddingham, Billie Lourd, Maya Erskine, Alex Winter, and even Marshmello, with Kurt Russell rounding out the ensemble.
The plot follows Smurfette as she ventures into the real world after Papa Smurf is mysteriously abducted by dark wizards Razamel and Gargamel. With new allies at her side, she must lead the Smurfs on a mission that could determine the fate of the universe. Written by Pam Brady and based on the beloved characters created by Peyo, “Smurfs” looks to blend nostalgia with modern charm.
Speaking at a previous CinemaCon event, Rihanna opened up about her experience in the recording booth: “Getting to do animation is a fun journey for me. I’m usually front and center with everything with my likeness…but this was fun, I got to imagine, I got to show up in my pajamas in my third trimester, and be a blue badass,” she laughed. “I hope this gives me a little bit of cool points with my kids one day.”
Also teased in the trailer is the upcoming film soundtrack, set to feature other major artists including Desi Trill, DJ Khaled, Cardi B, Natania, and Subhi, with the track “Higher Love” already generating buzz.
“Smurfs” opens in theaters nationwide on July 18, 2025, with the full soundtrack release expected to follow shortly. Until then, fans can stream “Friend of Mine” starting Friday.
