*Michael C. Hall is once again stepping into the blood-stained shoes of Dexter Morgan in the upcoming Showtime series “Dexter: Resurrection.” Picking up weeks after the dramatic events of “Dexter: New Blood,” the continuation finds Dexter awakening from a coma after being shot by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), and setting out to make amends in New York City.
“Yeah, I mean, there was always misgivings, you know, it always feels like a dice roll,” Hall said about returning to the franchise. “But I felt like it was worth exploring the idea that Dexter could find himself on the other side of that seeming end and give him a second chance at life.”
The actor was particularly drawn to the opening of the new series, which sees Dexter trapped in a liminal space between life and death.
“When I read the first script, I was so excited that the writers had him in that space between life and death, having these fever dreams populated by the Trinity Killer and Miguel Prado, James Dokes,” he shared. “I mean, being able to play scenes with those guys, see those actors again, and have the story of this show and the character emerge out of that soil… it’s such a rich mythology that exists for the show at this point and for the character.”
Hall noted that the story’s surreal beginning offered a powerful glimpse into Dexter’s psychological landscape: “It revealed so much about just how populated his internal landscape is. I thought it was a great way to start.”
Across multiple incarnations, Hall has portrayed Dexter through shifting stages of self-understanding and morality. Asked what keeps him coming back to the role, Hall was clear and candid.
“Well, you know, it’s a good gig, and you got to work,” he said. “But there’s something about Dexter. He just… I hear people talk about how they name their cats Dexter. I think that’s appropriate because he’s got at least nine lives.”
He added, “There’s something about watching him in different environments and different situations move forward. I mean, that remains compelling and fresh and new, and the more we do, the richer it feels, because it’s informed by an accumulating past and mythology.”

In “Dexter: Resurrection,” that past weighs heavily but doesn’t define him. “I think this season is exciting because he’s kind of able to put that past down. He doesn’t forget it, but he’s not beating himself up over it or doing penance anymore.”
As for the fan loyalty that has spanned nearly two decades, Hall expressed sincere gratitude.
“People like the show and the character for different reasons, but I’m just grateful they do, because if they didn’t, we’d just be, well, we wouldn’t be talking,” he said.
“I’m grateful that the show from the beginning struck a chord and hit a bullseye that invited people to identify with this character, and the fact that they still are is something we’re really, on the inside, grateful for,” Hall added.
