*Whoopi Goldberg appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and announced the launch of “the first global women’s sports channel.”
“I’m launching the first global women’s sports channel called AWSN (All Women’s Sports Network),” Whoopi said. “It’ll be the home for live women’s sports from around the world.”
“The View” co-host noted that AWSN “will be the home for live women’s sports from around the world,” she explained. “Everything from soccer, basketball, tennis, cricket…if a woman is playing it, we are showing it.”
The star added, “I wanted to do this because ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to play sports. And my brother could play…but they would say, ‘Oh hi little girl’ and it always p—ed me off.”
Goldberg gushed that AWSN, which partnered with CommonSpirit, is “growing really fast.”
“We’ve already launched in Asia, the Middle East, India on Jio (JioTV), and we’ve got a big announcement about our U.S. launch coming next week,” she added.
The comedian/actress explained to Fallow that she wanted to play sports when she was younger but was often dismissed or overlooked because she was a “little girl.”
“It always pissed me off,” Goldberg said. “So, for years, I’ve been talking to people and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could go around the world, start getting young athletes in high school so that we can grow with them and grow up with them?”
Goldberg told Fallon, “I feel like that will help us show that athletics, when they’re done brilliantly…it doesn’t matter who’s doing it. We don’t really have that relationship with women’s sports.”
