The Broncos Have Decided to Release QB Russell Wilson – Incurring An $85M Dead Money Blow | WATCH

*We knew that day was coming and today is that day. Russell Wilson‘s chapter with the Denver Broncos has come to a close as the team officially announces his release.

In a joint statement posted on the franchise’s official X page, head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton disclosed that they held discussions with the 35-year-old on Monday morning and mutually agreed to part ways.

“We spoke with Russell Wilson [Monday] to inform him of his release after the start of the league year [March 13, 4 p.m. ET],” the statement reads. “On behalf of the Broncos, we extend our gratitude to Russell for his contributions and unwavering dedication to our team and community. We wish him the very best as he continues his career journey. Looking ahead, our focus is set on assembling the most formidable team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are eager to enhance our roster this offseason and possess the flexibility to make significant improvements through both the draft and free agency.”

The finalization of Wilson’s release is slated for the onset of the new NFL year on March 13.

Although the prospect of a nine-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion hitting free agency may come as a surprise, it was not entirely unforeseen.

Wilson had faced benching by Payton in December following two lackluster seasons.

Denver had secured Wilson with a substantial five-year, $242.6 million contract upon his arrival, resulting in an $85 million dead money obligation over the subsequent two seasons due to his release.

Despite the parting of ways, Wilson expressed his appreciation for his time spent in Colorado and the warm embrace of the community.

“Over these last two years,” he conveyed in a heartfelt message addressed to Broncos supporters, “you have welcomed my family and me with open arms, embracing us as integral members of the community. This city will forever hold a special place in my heart. Our family flourished here, creating countless memories and enduring friendships, forging relationships that will stand the test of time.”

As speculation mounts regarding Wilson’s next destination, ranging from potential backup roles to starting positions in cities like Pittsburgh, New England, or Atlanta, Wilson remains steadfast in his resolve.

“Tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” Wilson concluded in his statement on Monday. “God’s got me. I am excited for what lies ahead.”
