*Award-winning radio legend Joe Madison died Tuesday following a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 74.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Joe Madison. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family,” the family statement said in a social media post.

Madison was a social activist known as “The Black Eagle,” who worked for Sirius XM Urban View, for the last 15 years. In the family’s statement, they urged his supporters to continue “to be proactive in the fight against injustice.”

Per journal-isms.com, Madison wrote December, “I’ve spoken candidly about my diagnosis to encourage more men to prioritize their health and talk with their healthcare providers about testing and treatments. As Dick Gregory once told me, ‘Don’t let fear get in the way.’ ”

As NewsOne reports, Madison was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. Following treatment, it went into remission. Last December, he announced that the cancer had returned.

Per journal-isms, Dan Lamothe wrote Sunday for The Washington Post, “Black men have a higher rate, about 1 in 6, and some veterans also may have a higher propensity to develop the disease.”

“We lost a true friend yesterday,” fellow radio veteran Donnie Simpson said on X/Twitter. “Joe Madison, ‘The Black Eagle,’ was a radio legend and freedom fighter. He was as committed to issues that affected Black America as anyone I’ve ever known.”

Madison’s radio career spanned more than 40 years. In 2019, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements.

As Journal-isms reports, Madison served as NAACP national political director from 1978 to 1986.

EUR Extra … In 2013 in honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Jeff Fortson, Jerry Bembry, and Joe Madison talked about their journey with prostate cancer. It was the first time three black prostate cancer survivors in their 40s, 50s, and 60s discussed their journey with the disease on the airwaves. The interview was conducted on The Joe Madison Show.
