*Days before its streaming premiere on Netflix, the animated remake of “Good Times” is generating a very negative response from viewers.
According to Sandra Rose, the unhealthy buzz comes after the trailer for the new series was released by the streamer. Executive produced by Seth MacFarlane, NBA icon Stephen Curry and Norman Lear, the “Good Times” remake features the voice talents of JB Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, Gerald Anthony “Slink” Johnson, Marsai Martin, and Wanda Sykes as descendants of the Evans family.
The original “Good Times” took place in the ’70s and featured a live-action cast comprised of John Amos, Esther Rolle, Bern Nadette Stanis, Ralph Carter, and Jimmie Walker as the Evans family. Despite Lear’s involvement with the remake, the reaction among the masses contrasts with the reverence given to its predecessor. Instead of positive feedback, Sandra Rose labeled the remake as a “farce,” going as far as to call it “a disrespectful mockery of the Black community that no one asked for.”
Among the minuses for the remake are drug dealing baby, profanity, shootouts, gangbangers, prostitution, dice games, alcoholism, rat-infested streets, a crack house, and every other Black stereotype,” the site noted.
Needless to say, social media hasn’t been kind to the new “Good Times,” which is set to debut on Netflix on April 12. Although they touch on different ways the show is offensive, the feedback is united in giving “Good Times” a solid thumbs down, based on the trailer.
“The goal of the original Good Times show was to disrupt the flow of negative stereotypes about black families. This remake does the opposite, it promotes and amplifies the most negative stereotypes of black families,” one person voiced on X (formerly Twitter).
Another person wrote: “A drug dealing baby? I don’t mind a story of the ghetto or hood lifestyle, but this is what y’all thought was a ‘good time’?” another user wrote.

This is blatant disrespect. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone.

Y’all thought you were slick making this the next generation like that is so terrible. Imagine watching the Evans family suffer terribly, the father work himself into the grave and see their descendants still in the ghetto.
