*Martin Luther King III reacted to Jonatha Majors’ recent comments about his mother, Coretta Scott King.
We reported earlier that when Majors spoke about his controversial domestic violence trial on ABC News, he referred to Coretta twice while noting how he wanted his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari (the woman at the center of the DV case), to support him similarly to how the late civil rights activist support her husband, Martin Luther King Jr. He also said his new girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, supports him “like a Coretta.”
Over the weekend, MLK III appeared on CNN, and anchor Victor Blackwell asked about Majors’ remarks.
“She was far more than just a prop,” MLK III said, echoing similar remarks that his sister, Dr. Bernice King, made on social media last week.
“I think in the context of what was said, that plus the personification of all of the many things that mom did during her life with dad, and after dad’s life, the King holiday wouldn’t exist, we wouldn’t be talking about Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday if it had not been for the work that my mom did,” he added in the video below.
Dr. Bernice King hit up X/Twitter and seemingly reacted to Majors’ comments about her mother.
“My mother wasn’t a prop,” she captioned a photo of Coretta on Jan. 9. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.”
Majors responded to Bernice in a statement via TMZ, saying, “My intention was to convey my utmost respect for Coretta Scott King, her achievements, and both her personal legacy and the one she shares with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King.”
The disgraced actor is facing up to a year behind bars after being found guilty of assault and harassment against Jabbari. His sentencing is scheduled for February 6.
