Kobe Bryant’s Parents Catch Wrath of Fans for Auctioning Championship Ring | WATCH

*During his life, Kobe Bryant had a less-than-loving relationship with his parents. With his passing, that relationship has reached a new low with a severe backlash from his father, Joe, and mother, Pamela, auctioning Bryant’s very first championship ring.

Chronicling discord between Bryant and his parents, Vibe mentioned that Kobe won the initial ring when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers in 2000. The moment marked the first of five NBA championships Kobe obtained in his pro sports career. While the basketball legend gave Joe Bryant the original ring as a gift, he gifted a replica of the 14-karat gold 40-diamond jewelry to Pamela.

Upon hearing about the auction, Kobe’s fans were more than happy to express how ticked off they were, with one labeling Bryant’s parents “disgraceful.” while another noted,

“Kobe would have never sold it. Wow sad,” another user noted, as a third user felt the initial ring should “stay in the family” or Kobe’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, buy it and “keep it safe.”

The auction of Kobe’s first championship ring is happening now and set to end on March 30, according to Goldin. Joe and Pamela Bryant’s efforts to auction off their son’s ring is the second time they have tried to sell some of Kobe’s prized possessions.

Vibe notes the athlete’s rocky relationship with his parents included many factors, particularly his relationship with Vanessa. After several fallouts while Kobe and Vanessa were seeing each other, Joe and Pamela reportedly attempted to make amends. Despite their attempts, Joe and Pamela were no-shows at the couple’s wedding in April 2001.

Although the conflicts and brief reconciliations were documented, things reached an end in 2013. The Los Angeles Times referenced a tweet Kobe posted that found him responding to his parents trying to sell the original championship ring and his high school jersey, among other items.

“When u give Give GIVE and they take Take TAKE at wat point do u draw a line in the sand?” Kobe tweeted, with the hashtags “hurt beyond measure,” “gave me no warning,” and finally, “love?”

Kobe ultimately held his parents accountable with a lawsuit he filed under his view that he was not notified about the auction of the items and did not give his permission to sell them. Further straining their relationship was the fact that they never attended Kobe’s final NBA game in April 2016.
