*For any singer covering a hit song, it must be just as good, if not better than the original version. Especially if the tune is done in front of the singer who made the tune a classic.

For Madaí Chakell, the test came recently when she confidently stepped up to sing Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” during an episode of “American Idol.” In addition to Perry herself, Chakell charmed and auditioned in front of Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

As Chakell sang “I Kissed A Girl,” TooFab noted that Perry appeared “somewhat stunned and, at times, almost uncomfortable by contestant’s performance. Nevertheless, the “Fireworks” vocalist was taken enough by Chakell’s confidence and voice that she requested a simpler tune to sing, like “Happy Birthday.

Turns out, “Happy Birthday” was the right choice for the 22-year-old “Idol” hopeful, with Perry taking even more notice.

“I appreciated ‘I Kissed A Girl’, that was wild and colorful. But if you could mix it with what you just did,” the “Wide Awake” hitmaker told Chakell after she changed her tune.

“I think you’re trying to grab people’s attention. I get it,” the “Wide Awake” Perry continued. “Doja Cat started with ‘Moo, I’m a cow’, look at her now. So you want to grab it and you want to hold it. That’s what I did with ‘I Kissed A Girl’.”

Ultimately, Chakell received a “Yes” from Richie and Perry, earning her a coveted Golden Ticket in the process.

Perry’s encounter with Chakell comes after she revealed the current season of “American Idol” will be her last.

“I think this will probably be my last season for Idol,” the 39-year-old entertainer recently said during an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“I love Idol so much,” she said, as the crowd audibly gasped. “It’s connected me with the heart of America. But I need to feel that pulse to my own beat.”

To see Perry in her final season on “American Idol” tune in Sunday nights on ABC.
