*Members of the Dolton, Illinois community are demanding the resignation of mayor Tiffany Henyard, known as the “Dolton Dictator,” amid scandals involving sexual assault and embezzlement.
Henyard faces accusations of misusing taxpayer funds for personal benefit and terminating a former employee who leveled sexual assault allegations against her, New York Post reports. In her three-year tenure, Henyard has faced mounting corruption allegations, particularly intensifying recently following her admission of a $2 million deficit.
This week, 100 protestors banged on the doors of Village of Dolton’s board meeting, and several individuals testified against Henyard, prompting four trustees to leave the chaotic scene.
The Post reports that one angry protestor told Henyard, “This is a disgrace what you have done to this village … They say that you’re the worst mayor in America. I agree.” Another added: “You’ve done nothing. You don’t care about nobody but yourself.”
In a Feb. 24 report on EURweb, Chris Richburg wrote, “Henyard’s antics are the latest debacle involving her time as mayor. Reporting on Henyard, media sources revealed Henyard has hired a PR firm to improve Dolton’s image. With that comes questions over trips taken to Las Vegas and New York, NBC Chicago noted. The station goes on to note how the village paid for billboards promoting the mayor, who makes close to $300,000 per year in salary serving as mayor and a Thornton Township supervisor.”
Last month, Henyard rejected a resolution unanimously passed by the four-person village board, which called for her to provide the village’s financial records and invite the FBI to conduct an independent investigation.
As reported by The Post, the April board meeting was set to discuss Henyard’s veto of an inquiry into her purported misuse of taxpayer funds and her $1 million police detail. The board pledged to override her decision during Monday’s session. However, the meeting concluded abruptly when police cleared the room, citing credible threats.
“Our job is to make sure we take care of business and not allow the business to handle us,” Henyard said before adjourning, per The Post.
“Why can’t we have transparency with what’s going on with our tax dollars?” one constituent asked during the meeting.
The mayor has denied all accusations of wrongdoing, claiming the allegations against her are a smear campaign.
“When she got into office, she just shut everyone out, and she went into the opposite direction. She became this tyrant and dictator,” said 55-year-old community member Sherry Britton.
