‘Diarra From Detroit’ Puts Ghosting at the Center of a Thrilling Mystery | Watch

BET+ newest series, “Diarra From Detroit,” is a blend of romance, mystery, and ghosting.

The series follows Diarra – portrayed by the show’s creator and writer, Diarra Kilpatrick – a school teacher grappling with the aftermath of a heartbreaking separation from her husband, Francois (Morris Chestnut). Struggling to come to terms with the end of her marriage, Diarra’s turmoil manifests in insomnia and frustration. However, a chance encounter with Chris (Shannon Wallace) who she meets on a dating app sparks a glimmer of hope, leading to a surprising date. But when Chris ghosts her, Diarra embarks on a quest for closure, unwittingly plunging into a chaotic adventure involving a decades-old missing person case.

The creator and cast of “Diarra From Detroit” shed light on the genesis of the series and its themes. Although Kilpatrick is married, she revealed that the prevalence of ghosting in modern relationships, as shared through friends, served as a starting point for the show’s narrative. She aimed to explore the societal norms surrounding ghosting while infusing the story line with elements of amateur detective work, resulting in a blend of genres.

Wallace portrays the mysterious Chris; he emphasized the allure of his character’s ambiguity and shared that as an actor, it was the challenge of unraveling the enigma surrounding him. Meanwhile, co-star Jon Chaffin, who plays Diarra’s childhood friend Danger, shared that he’s excited for people to see Diarra and Danger’s friendship. “Every woman needs a friend like Danger,” the actor said.

One of the show’s standout features is its authentic representation of Detroit and its community. Kilpatrick was keen on capturing the city’s diversity and complexity, showcasing characters from various walks of life. They also included local legends like John Salley and emerging talents like Claudia Logan and Kash Doll.

Beyond its gripping mystery, “Diarra From Detroit” delves into real-life conversations about relationships, friendships, and personal growth. Kilpatrick shared that she aimed to present a holistic portrayal of her protagonist’s world, exploring the nuances of her friendships and the emotional challenges she faces. She believes the series will resonate with viewers through its relatable themes of love, loss, and self-discovery.

The first three episodes of “Diarra From Detroit” premiere on BET+ on March 21 – with new episodes air weekly on Thursdays.
