Cavaliers Suspend Tristan Thompson for 25 Games Over Anti-Drug Violation

*The Cavaliers have issued a 25-game suspension to Tristan Thompson for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy.

ABC News reports that the 32-year-old backup center was suspended without pay after testing positive for “ibutamoren, a growth hormone, and SARM LGD-4033, commonly used by bodybuilders and weight lifters for muscle enhancement,” the outlet writes.

Thompson will be eligible to return on March 16 when the Cavs face Houston.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers fully support the NBA/NBAPA Anti-Drug Program, and we are disappointed in the recent news surrounding Tristan Thompson,” the team said in a statement. “His time away from game action will have an impact on our team. We stand behind Tristan and offer our support throughout this suspension period.”

As Business Insider reports, both ibutamoren and LGD-4033 — also known as Ligandrol, are banned by the NBA, the NCAA, and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Thompson is allowed to travel and practice during the suspension.

According to ABC News, his only restriction is that he must leave the arena at least two hours before tipoff of any game.

In his first nine seasons as a pro, Thompson played for the Cavaliers. Before this season, the team re-signed him as a free agent.

Thompson has bounced around numerous teams, having also played with Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, Chicago, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
