*The wait is no longer! The highly anticipated Starz series “Blindspotting” has made its second season debut.
Season two looks to be a standout and a refreshing piece of art. Co-Creators Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs use comedy, drama, and spoken word in every episode to evoke emotion and tell the stories of the characters living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We had the opportunity to hold an exclusive discussion with the cast and crew that included, Candace Nicholas Lippman, Helen Hunt, Benjamin Earl Turner, Jayleon Barron, Atticus Woodward, Casal, and Diggs.
When asked about the experience utilizing different mediums to illustrate the show on television, cast member Lippman (Janelle) stated, “It’s literally theater on screen, we are covering so many artistic mediums and for spoken words to be one of them, that’s a part of my story, and my ministry. I’m grateful to be a part of a show that uses that as a form of storytelling because it’s so important.”

Turner, who plays Earl, added, “The backbone of so much of our writing historically as a civilization is through poetry and narrative as a song. The way we told stories originally was through the grio, and with a drum. We’ve become so disconnected from multiple modes of storytelling that it feels cavalier.”
“Blindspotting” highlights many societal issues, from racism, family trauma, sex work, police brutality, and more. The show maintains its comedic tone while tackling some imperative topics, making these tough conversations palatable.
We asked Barron who plays Trish, what societal issue she felt most necessary to shed light on.
“Discussing the incarnation system of black and brown people, ya know with Earl being incarcerated for a little bit of weed, but a mile away is a person living in a million-dollar mansion for weed; It’d fine when they do it, but when black and brown people do it, they take them away and put them away. I’m glad that we get to finally tell this story that has been going on for far too long,” she stated.
In season one, viewers applauded Casal and Diggs for how authentic the series illustrated the Bay Area. Now in their sophomore season, they have added more Bay Area icons to appear. Guests include E-40, P-Low, and Too $hort. During our discussion, various cast members spoke about the fact that the show crew is intentional about the collaborative effort it takes to produce this series. We can concur that authenticity is seen and felt.
