According to Variety, Reginald Hudlin is helming the project for Amazon Studios, and filming is currently underway in Los Angeles. Details about the plot have not yet been revealed but Movieweb reports that the story is inspired by the childhood holiday experiences of scriptwriter Kelly Younger.

“Candy Cane Lane” is the first project in Murphy’s three-picture deal with Amazon Studios.

“Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family.”

Amazon Studios Announces Iconic Event with Reginald ‘Reggie’ Hudlin, Opening of ASVP & Stage 15
Amazon Studios Announces Iconic Event with Reginald ‘Reggie’ Hudlin, Opening of ASVP & Stage 15

Last year, Amazon Studios launched Stage 15, a virtual production stage, and the formation of the new Amazon Studios Virtual Production (ASVP) department.

As EUR reported previously, the stage combines two former stages to accommodate an LED wall that is 80 feet in diameter and 26 feet tall. The first feature film to shoot on the new Stage 15 will be the family holiday comedy “Candy Cane Lane.”

The ASVP department will shepherd each project on Stage 15, transferring institutional knowledge along with an optimized workflow developed in partnership with—and powered by—Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The division has a full-time executive, engineering, and creative team of 20 that has been operating in stealth mode since 2020 on the design, pipeline, and build-out of Stage 15. Working with the volume wall, production creatives can interact with digital assets and processes in a manner that mirrors live-action to enable digital world capture, visualization, performance capture, simulcam, and in-camera visual effects.

Next up for Murphy, he’s producing and starring in Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop 4” and will star in Kenya Barris’ “You People” for the streaming giant.
