*Rich Paul was a guest on SiriusXM’s The Clay Cane Show, where he discussed his new memoir, Lucky Me, and his career as a sports agent, among other topics.
When asked whether it’s true that white athletes don’t trust black agents, Paul confirmed that has been his experience.
“That’s accurate, yeah. …It’s not international players because international players actually have a different outlook on it…. But if you grew up in, you know, Indiana or Georgia or, you know, or Oklahoma, or even Ohio for that matter. Yeah, no.”
When the host, Clay Cane, pointed out how wild that is considering his successful career, Paul responded, “You would think it’d be a line down the street, but it’s not. Yeah.”
Cane also joked about whether Paul’s longtime partner, Adele, ever calls him and just says, “Hello, it’s me,” with Paul jokingly saying she does not.
CLAY CANE, HOST: I was talking to a friend of mine who works in sports, and he said that as successful as Rich Paul is, white athletes and white families, don’t trust a black sports agent. So I wanted to know, is that your – is that an accurate statement?
RICH PAUL: That’s accurate, yeah. Now that’s not necessarily, you know, when we think about that, we’re not, it’s not international players because international players actually have a different outlook on it.
CANE: Wow.
PAUL: And I represent an international player, Jusuf Nurkic. He’s from Bosnia, so he has a different outlook on it. But if you grew up in, you know, Indiana or Georgia or, you know, or Oklahoma, or even Ohio for that matter. Yeah, no.
CANE: Do you have any white American athletes that you —
PAUL: No, not one.
CANE: Wow.
PAUL: No. I mean, not in basketball. I don’t represent.
CANE: Right.
PAUL: Yeah. It’s, oh yeah, that’s a very tough thing for sure.
CANE: As successful as you’ve been. That’s wild.
PAUL: Yeah. You would think it’d be a line down the street, but it’s not. Yeah.
CANE: Alright brother, before you go, I know you’re notoriously private about your relationship.
PAUL: Yeah.
CANE: But I do want to ask you one question.
PAUL: Sure.
CANE: Has she (Adele) ever called you and said, “Hello, it’s me?”
PAUL: No. No.
