New Orleans Senior Receives 125 College Offers, $9 Million in Scholarships | Video

*New Orleans senior Dennis Barnes received 125 college offers and more than $9 million in scholarships, setting a new U.S. record.

“I submitted college applications in August, with an eye on raising the bar high for college admissions. Decision letters were an overflow in my mailbox and hundreds of scholarship offers,” Barnes said, The Black Wall Street Times reports.

Barnes attends the International High School of New Orleans, where he has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 4.98. 

The IHSNO said offers from schools are still coming in for Barnes.

For the past two years, the high school senior has been earning college credits at the Southern University of New Orleans, studying criminal justice and computer science.

As WWLTV reports, Barnes is fluent in Spanish and holds leadership positions in the National Honor Society. He was recently honored by Maria Page, Honorary Consul of Spain in New Orleans, with the Jose Luis Babos Award for Excellence in Spanish Language.

Barnes’ scholarship offers surpass the previous Guinness World Record of $8.7 million in scholarships received by a Lafayette high school senior in 2019. Barnes’ school is reportedly in the process of contacting Guinness to have his new record recognized.

Barnes intends to announce his college decision on May 2. He graduates from IHSNO on May 24.
