*PagerDuty is laying off part of its staff and CEO Jennifer Tejada informed employees about the cuts in an email in which she used quotes from late civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
In her email, per WebProNews, Tejada said the company will be laying off “roughly 7% of roles globally, the vast majority of which are in North America, primarily in our go-to-market and G&A organizations.”
Tejada explains that the layoffs are necessary to support other company-related entities.
The email states: Decisions were predicated on business rationale that included, for example, protecting investments in top product development priorities like our new Incident Workflows, self service and product-led growth (PLG), and continued AIOps and Automation enhancements, improving spans of control and streamlining management layers, expanding teams and roles in Santiago and Lisbon, and addressing our enterprise opportunity with a hybrid strategic and high-velocity GTM motion that continues to improve our productivity.”

The most tone-deaf layoff email I read so far was written yesterday, and it comes from PagerDuty CEO Jennifer Tejada.
The email is vey long, and feels like it was written by an AI that took all the phrases that people usually say, and put it one long email.

“None of this would be possible without you, our leadership, and our board — thank you for your grit and resilience, your commitment to our customers and your support of our values and people,” the email continues.
The message to staff goes on to quote MLK, stating: “I am reminded in moments like this, of something Martin Luther King said, that “the ultimate measure of a [leader] is not where [they] stand in the moments of comfort and convenience, but where [they] stand in times of challenge and controversy.”
Tejada’s message makes clear that “PagerDuty is a leader that stands behind its customers, its values, and our vision — for an equitable world where we transform critical work so all teams can delight their customers and build trust.”
On Twitter, one user wrote in response to the company’s layoff email, “Say it short, say it to the point, and don’t make it about yourself by closing with an MLK quote referring very clearly to yourself and how good of a leader you are right now (akin to MLK). Also, perhaps don’t switch from “we’re laying off” to “I’m so excited to…”?”
Another user commented, “May be tone deaf but how else are they going to say it? Management is never going to be negative nancy.”
