*As part of a tentative agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the league will no longer test players for marijuana.

A collective bargaining agreement was announced between the two sides, which must still be ratified before it becomes official, according to The Athletic.

It is expected that the seven-year deal if ratified by the NBA players and team governors will include an agreement eliminating marijuana from the drug testing program and prohibiting NBA players from being penalized for using it.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the National Basketball Players Association said: “Specific details will be made available once a term sheet is finalized.”

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic “NBA players will no longer be prohibited for marijuana under the new seven-year Collective Bargaining Agreement.”

“It’s been removed from the anti-drug testing program, a process that began during 2019-20 season,” he reported.

“Since day one, the goal of the NBPA in this negotiation was to protect our players, enrich their lives on and off the court, and establish a framework that recognizes our players as true partners with the governors in both the NBA and the business world at large!” NBPA executive director Tamika Tremaglio said in a tweet.
