Most of our high school experiences are something we would not want to relive. Just imagine what it would be like to experience high school for eternity. That is what Maddie has to deal with in the new Paramount Plus series “School Spirits.”
Maddie, played by Payton List, is stuck in limbo between life and the afterlife. Before she completely crosses over to the afterlife she has to solve the case of her disappearance.
She isn’t alone during this transition as she finds herself accompanied by others who have yet to fully enter into the afterlife. Charley and Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin) try to help Maddie accept her new reality. Charley, played by Nick Pugliese, who’s been a ghost for years befriends Maddie and shows her the ropes of life in the in-between. Maddie then has Charley assisting her on her quest to solve her disappearance which leads to her death. During this time Maddie is seeing how her friends and classmates are reacting to her death. Once she sees her best friends’ efforts in helping to find her she tries to assist them by giving them clues and reaching out to them using her abilities as a ghost.
We spoke with the cast and talked about the abilities Maddie has to hunt or be incognito – at their old high school – and what they would do with that ability.
“I would mess with the teachers I didn’t like,” said Pugliese.
After hearing Pugliese’s response List realizes her character played it cool with the students who weren’t very sympathetic after her death.
“Now that I think about it…I’m surprised Maddie didn’t try to do more to the people that were so cruel to her after she died,” said List.
