*Attorney Kamilah Moore, who chairs the California Reparations Task Force, says pushback on the topic is due to the misinformation being spread by the media.

“FYI: All news headlines claiming the California Reparations Task Force is presently urging any specific amount of compensation per Black CA resident is complete misinformation. In fact, the task force has not yet recommended any particular monetary amount, or determined whether…” Moore tweeted on March 15.

As we reported previously, the task force, formed by Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020 to study reparations proposals, met on December 14 and 15 for their final public meetings of 2022. The committee previously approved the first step of a proposal to compensate descendants of slaves for up to $223,000. A final proposal will be announced in early 2023.

One proposal is to give every Black citizen in the state a $360,000 check, according to reports. To qualify for a reparations payout, one has to prove their lineage either via a DNA website.

The nine-member California reparations task force committee has a deadline of July 1 to deliver its final report of recommendations for reparations payouts.

“If California can admit its sins and change the narrative, then there is a way forward for states and cities across the nation,” said California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, who authored the bill creating the task force, per Fox Business.

Moore is reportedly calling for the creation of a Bureau of African American Affairs award of up to $223,000 to every descendant of African slaves.

According to Moguldom, at the committee’s most recent meeting on March 4, they did not discuss any specific dollar amount. “Instead, the task force voted to strengthen the power of a proposed ‘freedmen affairs’ agency it says the state should create to help carry out reparations on behalf of California,” reported Cal Matters

Moore reportedly said the vote was necessary as part of the committee’s consideration of public comments and testimony from experts on the subject.

“We have the duty and right to reconsider any decision that we’ve made,” she said.

“No one tells the Native Americans that the Bureau of Indian Affairs is too wonky or bureaucratic or that they don’t deserve it. No one tells our immigrant families and folks that the Office of Immigrant Affairs is too wonky or bureaucratic. So why should that answer be sufficient for the descendants of slaves?” Moore reportedly asked.
