Mayor Eric Adams has faced heavy criticism in recent weeks for his response to the fatal choking of Jordan Neely, The Hill reports. Earlier this month, Neely, 30, a Black mentally ill homeless man, allegedly became unruly on a subway train in NYC so Marine veteran Daniel Penny, a white man, responded by putting him in a chokehold.

Neely lost consciousness during the attack and later died in a hospital. An autopsy ruled his death was a homicide. Adams has received criticism for not initially denouncing Penny’s actions.

A video posted on social media shows many students at CUNY turning their backs on Adams in protest as he gave their commencement address (watch below).

Last week Penny was charged with second-degree manslaughter. His attorneys claim Neely acted in self-defense.

Mainstream media outlets and national police organizations are calling Penny a “hero.”

Fabien Levy, the press secretary for Adams, issued a statement to The Hill about the CUNY graduates.

“As the mayor always says, this city may have 8.8 million people, but it also has 35 million opinions,” Levy wrote. “We thank these graduates for going into the field of law and their willingness to serve their communities — helping those who are disadvantaged, crafting public policy and legislation, or serving in public office themselves.”

“The mayor looks forward to seeing how these graduates serve our city in the future,” he added.
