*Celebrated jazz musician Frédéric Yonnet reunited with Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese to contribute to the movie score for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a film based on the true story of the mysterious disappearance of members of the Osage Native American tribe in the 1920s.

Yonnet also worked on Scorsese’s Netflix film, “The Irishman” (2019). In fact, according to his bio, it’s Yonnet’s haunting instrumental sound you hear in mob films, telegraphing when someone is going to get whacked, and it’s the telling tune that evokes emotion in Scorsese’s upcoming film “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023) on Apple TV+.

Per the official synopsis: “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic Western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” tracks the suspicious murders of members of the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight after oil was discovered underneath their land.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” also stars Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, and is based on David Grann’s best-selling book.  In a new interview with The Hindustan Times, Scorsese, 80, shut down criticism about the film’s lengthy runtime of 3 hours and 26 minutes.

“People say it’s three hours, but come on,” the director said. “You can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours. Also, there are many people who watch theatre for 3.5 hours. There are real actors on stage, you can’t get up and walk around. You give it that respect, give cinema some respect.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon

“Killers of the Flower Moon” hits theaters Oct. 20 before streaming on AppleTV+, and Scorsese urges fans to watch it on the big screen.

“Are we intending to make a blockbuster? No, we’re making a movie, which should [be] watched on the big screen,” Scorsese told the outlet.

He added: “Other pictures I made? Maybe not. Sometimes, it’s the strength of the picture too, if it plays well on a smaller screen, that’s interesting. Killers could play on a small screen, but in order to truly immerse yourself, you should take out the time.”

Yonnet, meanwhile, has been featured on numerous albums, films, and television shows and has worked with late singer Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Ed Sheeran. In an exclusive with EUR, the musician unpacked his collaborative relationship with Scorsese and the creative process of using a combination of unique harmonica sound effects to connect the audience with “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Watch the conversation with EUR’s Ny MaGee below.
