*A superb Julie Delpy (Hélène)  is surrounded by an outstanding cast in “The Lesson,” an electrifying thriller directed by Alice Troughton. The drama begins with Liam (Daryl McCormack), an aspiring and ambitious young writer, who accepts a tutoring position at the family estate of his idol, renowned author J.M. Sinclair (Richard E. Grant).

But soon, Liam realizes that he is ensnared in a web of family secrets, resentment, and retribution. Sinclair, his wife Hélène, and their son Bertie (Stephen McMillan) all guard a dark past, one that threatens Liam’s future as well as their own.

As the lines between master and protégé blur, class, ambition, and betrayal become a dangerous combination in this taut noir shocker.

However, as more and more crumbs drop, the trail leads to a calculating Hélène.

In an exclusive Zoom interview with Delpy, she talked about what drew her to “The Lesson” and what she hoped audiences will walk away with when they leave the theater.

Julie, other than the female gaze, what else drew you to ‘The Lesson’?

JULIE DELPY: Something about it spoke to me. I don’t know if it’s the horrible Sinclair, the writer thief, the writer’s father, who was a destructive egomaniac, I don’t know. Something about it fascinated me right away.

There are many open wounds in this tale of betrayal. What strikes you as one of the most important?

JD: They don’t even speak about their son, Felix. ‘We don’t speak about this, we don’t speak about that.’ And it’s kind of this dying society where there is so much that is unspoken within the family. It’s so destructive because the truth is, the only way to be healthy in a relationship or in a family is to speak about the problems, right?

How was it working with Daryl?

JD: It was great. He’s really focused, very, very focused on his craft, and very serious about his work.

What do you want audiences to walk away with?

JD: With the feeling that this is an intelligent thriller with interesting, unusual people, and it elevates the thriller genre.

“The Lesson,” which had its World Premiere at Tribeca, is now in theaters.
