*Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union are one of the strongest couples around, with all their ups and downs through the years. And while they remain a solid unit, things almost took a different turn when Union got wind of Wade having a child with another woman.
During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe‘s “Club Shay Shay” podcast this week, Wade came clean about the situation, which involved him fathering his 9-year-old son, Xavier, with Aja Metoyer during a pause in his relationship with Union in 2013, TMZ reports. Although he is now married to Union, the basketball legend revealed the issue is something they still deal with.
“It hasn’t been perfect,” Wade said. “It will never be perfect. We go to therapy, been to therapy. We’ve had shouts about it, regular conversations about it. It’s going to continue to be something that I have to work at and work on.”
Ending his relationship with Union was a definite option during that time to avoid coming to grips with the situation. However, Wade chose to stick with the “Being Mary Jane” star and not throw in the towel, after realizing she was in it for the long haul.
“I tried to pussyfoot around it,” Wade stated. “I tried to break up with her. ‘Hey, things have been bad lately.’ ‘Hey, we’ve been having a little distance in our relationship anyway.’ I tried all of that. She kept showing up.”
To say Wade is thankful for not taking the breakup option is an understatement. He and Union married in 2014, sharing a united life together.
Wade may have overcome his infidelity and found a solid partner in Union to tackle tough issues, but he is clear when expressing how he feels for his son.
In Wade’s eyes, the young boy will forever be scarred by his father cheating on his mother.
“When it comes to my son, that’s hard for him,” said Wade. “This is going to always be there. He’s done nothing. It’s a stain that’s on him for no reason.”
