*David Oyelowo, plays Sheriff Holston in the new Apple TV+ series “Silo.” He shared insights into his character’s mindset and relationship with his wife, Alison (played by Rashida Jones).
The show features a talented ensemble cast, including Tim Robbins, Common, and Harriet Walter. “Silo” tells the story of the last 10,000 people on Earth living in a mile-deep silo to protect themselves from a toxic and deadly world outside.
As Sheriff Holston, Oyelowo’s character maintains order in the silo, a fragile community where people must coexist in close quarters underground. The past is kept secret due to a rebellion that occurred at some point in the silo’s history, making it a challenging environment for Sheriff Holston to maintain law and order. Things get even more complicated when his wife Alison starts asking difficult questions about the silo’s history, prompting a shift in their relationship.
Oyelowo notes the relationship between Holston and Alison is well-established, having known each other for a long time. He loves her inquisitive and playful nature, but this becomes challenging when he becomes the sheriff of the silo. While he can keep the law and a law-abiding society outside of his home, it becomes tricky when it infiltrates their personal lives. The repercussions of Alison’s questions are devastating, and the show explores the impact of the truth on the fragile community.
When asked what intrigued him about his character, he shared, “his ordinariness made him so attractive to me because the story’s backdrop is so extraordinary. And to have a man as relatable as wholesome, someone who wants to start a family with his wife, someone who wants to do a good job, someone who values the opportunity and the position he has been afforded, someone who is not there to try and abuse power, but probably, if he’s totally honest, recognizes that something is off and is caught between a rock and a hard place. And I think all of those things are incredibly relatable, and I truly believe we go to stories to see ourselves reflected to us, and so for me that that was the thing that was most attractive about the character.”
“Silo” premiered on May 5, with the first two episodes, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday on Apple TV+.
