*Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion want to star together in a remake of B.A.P.S, according to director Robert Townsend.

The original 1997 film, helmed by Townsend, starred Halle Berry and late actress Natalie Desselle-Reid as two tackey homegirls who move to L.A. to become dancers; instead, they scam a dying millionaire but eventually become B*A*P*S (Black American Princesses),” per IMDB. The film received a slew of negative reviews upon release but ultimately became a cult classic in the Black community.

“There’s people that love, love, love the film and some people that didn’t get it. And those that love it—like you love it and you get it—I’ve had people go, ‘Hey, we want to do a remake,’” Townsend said in an interview with Slash Film. “Everybody from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B is like, ‘Could we do…’ I mean, it’s like, I don’t know.”

Townsend added, “It’s kind of interesting because some people love B.A.P.S. and then some people don’t like B.A.P.S., and some people are mad because they go, ‘You gave Halle Berry gold teeth and blonde hair.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I did!’”

Townsend said he caught flack for pivoting to “this kind of comedy” as a director when he made B.A.P.S. but noted that the film represented Black women at a time when Hollywood rarely did.

“It’s a well-made movie and if you go on the ride and go, ‘Oh, it’s two country girls trying to make some money and then they find who they are, and at the end of the day, they do win.’ But it’s because they’re being honest and transparent,” he said.

Desselle-Reid passed away in 2020 at age 53 from colon cancer. At the time, Halle Berry hit up social media to pay tribute to the actress. In an emotional post shared on Twitter, Berry said “Natalie was one of the most precious people I’ve ever known.”

Berry added,  “The second I met her our hearts [were] intertwined — we had a connection that was simply unexplainable, and she stayed her same sweet self all the years I knew her.”
