*Black American workers are reportedly taking advantage of a pandemic-related boom in the transportation and utilities sector.
“The number of Black women who became truck drivers [over the past year] alone and meaningfully boosted their income was huge,” Julia Pollak, chief economist for the jobs site ZipRecruiter, told The Financial Times.
According to the outlet, Black American workers moving into transportation have seen the fastest wage growth of any racial group last year. In 2022, the median Black worker had a wage increase of 11.3 percent pay, compared with 7.4 percent for all other racial groups, according to U.S. Department of Labor data.
Last year nearly 20 percent of the 2.3mn truck transportation workers in America were Black, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden claims Black workers, who historically earn less than their white counterparts, have seen their wages rise in post-COVID America.
“We created over 12 million jobs — the strongest job growth of any presidency in the first two years of our history,” he said during a Black History Month reception on Feb. 27.
“Black unemployment is near record lows. Wages for Black workers are up,” Biden added.
Oxfam America published a study in 2022 that reportedly found that in 28 states, over half of the Black workers earn less than $15 an hour. It also noted that 47 percent of Black workers across the nation earn less than $15 an hour.
A study reportedly conducted by economists at the University of Chicago and Duke noted that since the 1970s full-time Black workers continue to earn roughly 20 percent less than their white counterparts.
