If you were excited to see the live-action version of Disney’s Aladdin, then you will be ecstatic to see this story played out live and in person. Aladdin the musical has come to Los Angeles!
Seeing the characters that you love up close and personal is an experience you will not forget. The Genie’s performance is larger than life. Because I grew up watching the cartoon version I have high expectations for the “Friend Like Me” scene. When the live-action version was announced I wondered if Will Smith could bring the same energy the late Robin Williams brought. I had that same wonder with the stage version. I was also intrigued by how it would look visually. Oh, but the cast and creative team of Aladdin on Broadway did not disappoint! Marcus M. Martin, who plays Genie, was remarkable.
From his boisterous energy to his acting and attention to the crowd, he definitely made the Genie character his own. I was able to speak with him about this role. Martin has been dreaming of playing this character since he was 16 years old.
“I was watching the Tony Awards, like most theater kids do. I saw the original Genie on Broadway, James Monroe Iglehart, perform “Friend Like Me” on The Tony’s and I knew I could pull it off one day, said Martin.
The story of “Aladdin” may focus on the love between him and Princess Jasmine. But another love story is the relationship between Genie and Aladdin. Watching the stage version I was more moved by the relationship between these two. I spoke with Adi Roy, who plays Aladdin, about the chemistry between himself and Marcus. He talked about the first time they met. The two ran lines together during the audition process.
“From there we kind of built a relationship and I think that really showed in the room. Now we’re here a year in traveling the country together, we’ve made so many great memories,” said Roy.
The kid in me now has a lasting memory of watching one of my favorite Disney movies live and in person. You can also create that same memory by attending Aladdin on Broadway at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles.
