*We’ll get to “Plane” and “House Party,” shortly. The big news from the box office is that “Avatar: The Way of Water” maintained its box office lead for a fifth straight weekend. The James Cameron blockbuster racked in over $31.1 million from Friday to Sunday over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. It has so far grossed $563 million in the U.S. and taken in an incredible total of $1.9 billion worldwide.

Coming second at the box office is “M3GAN,” a horror released by Universal and Blumhouse. “M3GAN” scared up $17.9 million over three days, enabling it to have yet another great weekend since it hit the screens two weeks ago. Its domestic total now stands at $56.4 million.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” released by Universal, in its fourth weekend took the third position with $13.4 million. It has now brought in over $106 million.

“A Man Called Otto,” a comedic drama by Tom Hanks which opened in select theaters on Christmas day, expanded further across the nation, earning a strong $12.6 million for a fourth position this weekend. It is now playing in 3,802 locations.  Over the weekend, it had a per location average of $3,327 in the U.S. and Canada.

Released by Sony Pictures, “A Man Called Otto” is a heartwarming tale of Otto, a grumpy widower who develops friendships with his younger neighbors and comes out of his gloomy life. Otto puts his plan to commit suicide on hold when a couple with young children move into the neighborhood and they bring sunshine to his dark life.
